| This course is designed to equip the student with the skills needed to facilitate and mediate conflict in their day to day business function, or within the community. The aim of the course is to summarise some of the basic guidelines for untrained people who may become involved in negotiation or mediation in group conflicts whether social, economic or industrial. Training in negotiation and mediation is aimed at helping change to come about with as little violence or industrial unrest and disorganisation as possible. Negotiation does not guarantee peaceful or just solutions but, compared with violence, or industrial disorganisation, it offers more constructive opportunities for accommodating conflict. Violence often achieves short-term immediate success, but its destructive impact on society leaves a legacy of hatred and revenge which can inhibit or totally prevent long-term social or industrial harmony.
