This Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) home study programme will help learners to gain a greater perspective of healthy eating and the role of food in maintaining health, increased confidence in planning and achieving a healthy diet and an understanding of how an individual’s dietary requirements change throughout their life. In addition to this, you will also gain a greater awareness of the dietary requirements of particular individuals, as well as an understanding of food labelling and the ability to use information from food labels. This VRQ is accredited and certificated by NCFE as a Level 2 Qualification on the NQF and has been reviewed against the relevant National Occupational Standards (NOS) in Food Preparation and Cooking. The NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Nutrition and Health has been accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) and is part of the National Qualifications Framework. It has been developed in response to rising levels of obesity in both adults and children. The statistics are startling: about 20% of Britons are now classified as obese. A report by the National Audit Office warns that if the current trends continue, a quarter of British adults will be obese by 2010. In addition, it is estimated that illnesses associated with poor eating habits are already costing the NHS more than £500 million per year. VRQs are nationally recognised qualifications which are based on the national framework of qualifications at all levels. Like NVQs they cover the functions of managing activities, people, resources, information, energy and quality.
